Emerging Couture
The death of haute couture has been announced and denied many times over, but there is no denying that the international client base has withered away to just a happy few, and economic realities have eradicated most French couture houses, leaving behind a few stalwart standard bearers like Dior, Chanel and Givenchy. In response to the couture crisis, the Fédération Française de la Couture, which sets the standards for the industry, has eased its draconian rules to enable talented young designers to show during couture week (which incidentally, has dwindled down to three days). Christophe Josse, Alexis Mabille, Giambattista Valli and Iris van Herpen are some the new hopes for French couture. Stay tuned for the next chapter in this unique fairytale à la française.
