AMERICAN MASKS IN PARIS

Paris Update kachina auction 21-Situlilu

The Zuni rattlesnake kachina, a Situlilu helmet mask, is made of leather, wood, turkey feathers, and wool. Estimate: €20,000-€25,000.

Under strong protest from the Hopi community in the United States (read about it here), one of the largest collections of Hopi ceremonial masks ever to be sold at auction will go under the hammer at Drouot Richelieu on April 12 at 2:30pm. These 70 fabulous katsinam (or kachinas), dating from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, were collected over a period of 30 years by a Frenchman living in the United States. They will be on show 11am-6pm through April 6 at Galerie Nast Reveillaud (10, rue d’Alger, 75001 Paris) and at Drouot Richelieu (9, rue Drouot, 75009 Paris) 11am-6pm on April 11 and 11am-noon on April 12.
