Paris Update What’s New in Paris
WINE ON THE WATER
Why go to the wine shop when the wine shop can come to you, at least if you live on a Parisian canal. The converted barge Caroline, a.k.a. the Cave Vagabonde, specializing in wines (many of them organic, “natural” or biodynamic) from small, independent producers in northern Burgundy, moors at three different spots on the Canal de l’Ourcq, Bassin de la Villette and Canal Saint Martin. We highly recommend it – it’s just so much more romantic to do your shopping on a boat.
WINE ON THE TERRACE
In the finally arrived summer weather, a great place to have a glass of wine and a plate of cheese or charcuterie outdoors in Paris is Les Caves de Prague (8 Rue de Prague, 75012 Paris; tel.: 01 72 68 07 36), named for the tree-lined street it is located on, not for the source of the wine. When the weather is less glorious, the interior is just as appealing, with its lively ambiance and pretty decor. Quotes about wine painted on the walls – among them Michel Simon’s punning “Je préfère les vins d’ici à l’eau de là” and Baudelaire’s “Boire du vin c’est boire du genie” – help fuel conversation.
