TOURING PARIS WITH AN IPHONE

The Pavillon de l’Arsenal has launched a free application for iPhone, Guide Paris Archi, offering photos and details – date, architect, plans, description – on 1,200 Paris buildings constructed in the 20th and 21st centuries. Thanks to its geolocalization function, you can look up a building that catches your eye while strolling the streets of Paris or take a self-guided tour of the city’s modern architecture. Some stellar Modernist buildings are grouped in the 16th arrondissement, for example (search for “Mallet-Stevens” or “Le Corbusier”). New buildings will be added periodically.
I tested another free app based on a great idea and developed by the city of Paris, My Paris Street Art, which is supposed to show official photos of murals around the city as well as images contributed by users, but I could not get it to work. If anyone has better luck, please let me know. Note to app developers: please don’t use pale gray for explanatory text, it is nearly impossible to read. Heidi Ellison
