C’est Ironique Sign of the Weeque
Spotted by reader John Friedman.
Everyone knows that Donatien Alphonse François “Marky” de Sade was a French author, philosopher, politician and sexual whack job. But what few people know is that he also founded one of France’s oldest bakeries. It’s probably not a good idea to order “hot buns” here.
Special note to the young American tourist whom I overheard last year while strolling through Lacoste, the historic Provençal village and site of the Marquis de Sade’s former château: actually, it’s not pronounced “shah-day.”
