C’est Ironique Sign of the Weeque
Plaque spotted on Rue de Gramont. This might not actually be a French company, but it’s still a pretty strange use of English and, more importantly, it offers me an excuse to shoot my mouth off about a small but significant difference in mindset between France and the United States:
In America, children pluck the petals off daisies saying, “(S)he loves me, (s)he loves me not…” French kids also dismember marguerites, but the recitation is somewhat different: “Il/elle m’aime un peu, beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie, pas du tout.” — “(S)he loves me a little, a lot, passionately, to the point of insanity, not at all.”
In other words, in the States your odds for emotional fulfillment are a straight 50-50, whereas in France you have a four out of five chance of getting at least a little makeout session. Much better.
Then again, you also have a 20 percent chance of acquiring a stalker, so I guess it balances out. David Jaggard
