Océans, the new film directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud, is full of incredibly beautiful images of exotic life in the depths of the world’s oceans. Unfortunately, Perrin has chosen a midway path between informative narration and no narration at all. The result is a preachy, portentous narrative voice (luckily, it is heard only sporadically) that frustrates by telling you nothing about the amazing creatures you are seeing. The framing device of using a little boy (Perrin’s own son, Lancelot) staring in wonder is equally annoying. For those who want to know more, the names of the species seen in the movie and the location in which they were filmed can be found on the official Web site.
