AU WC FOND DU COULOIR
I remember seeing this in the United States about 15 years ago, and now it’s catching on in Paris: restaurants that take their name from their address. In Paris we have, among many, many others, Le 1 Place Vendôme, Le 4 Place Saint Germain, Le 7 bis Monceau, Le 10 République, Le 16 Haussmann, Le 20 de Bellechasse, Le Cherche Midi 22 and Le 23 Clauzel. Some of them use only part of their address, like Le 2 Bis Café (on Rue des Ecoles), the Passage 53 (at 53 Passage des Panoramas) and one called simply “Le 3” at 3 Rue Sainte Croix de la Bretonnerie. I suppose including the entire address on the sign and menus would have bankrupted them. Taking the concept into somewhat new territory, a restaurant opened in the 9th arrondissement last year with the name 37m2. Yes, the Thirty-Seven Square Meters. It’s quite good although, obviously, small. But it made me wonder: if this trend for matter-of-fact “found” names for restaurants continues, we could soon see bistros called Le 18 Tables, Le 5,300 Euros Par Mois, Au WC Fond du Couloir (Toilet Down the Hall) or possibly Le Mon Beau-Père L’a Financé Dans l’Espoir Que Je Fasse Quoi Que Ce Soit (My Father-in-Law Financed This Place in Hopes that I Would Do Something – Anything – with My Life).
