May Day

The revolutionary spirit lives on in France. At the tail end of the May Day parade last Friday, we spotted signs calling for the end of capitalism, a “rêve général” (a grève générale is a general strike) and civil disobedience (a reference to the new fad for kidnapping bosses and holding them hostage?). A favorite slogan was “Casse-toi, pauvre con,” coupled with caricatures of President Nicolas Sarkozy, who used the very same phrase (meaning “Get lost, asshole”) to a worker who wouldn’t shake hands with him last year at the Salon de l’Agriculture.
