NEVER (SHOP) ON SUNDAY
The Paris City Council has said no to Mammon, refusing to extend the right to stay open on Sunday to more categories of retail stores. “Do we want to live in a world where consumerism reigns supreme?” asked Mayor Bertrand Delanoë. The government of President Nicolas Sarkozy, which is in favor of Sunday shopping, has given mayors the right to decide for their own cities. Currently, stores in seven designated tourist areas, including the Champs-Elysées, have the right to open on Sunday and employers are not required to supplement the pay of staff. In another category of special exceptions they must pay extra.
