WEIL SIXTH IN A SHORT LINE OF
FEMALE ACADEMICIANS
Last Thursday, Simone Veil, World War II concentration-camp survivor and the person who deserves the most credit for the legalization of abortion in France in 1974, became only the sixth woman to enter the hallowed portals of the Académie Française since it was founded in 1635. Nicolas Sarkozy, who initially said he was too busy to attend the ceremony, changed his mind at the last minute, no doubt in an (unsuccessful) attempt to save his political party from disaster in the second round of regional elections, which took place over the weekend.
