SILENT MOVIES

La Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, keeper of the archives of Pathé, the film production company founded in 1896, has opened a new cinema in the 13th arrondissement showing only silent films, accompanied by live piano music. Ticket-holders can also visit an exhibition of antique movie cameras and projectors, and admire some fabulous posters dating from the toddler years of filmmaking. All this is housed in a spectacular new snail-shaped steel, glass and wood building designed by Renzo Piano, mostly hidden behind the historic facade of the cinema once located on the site, adorned with sculptures by Rodin. The archives (pictured above) can be consulted by appointment.

WHICH WINE GLASS?
Tableware retailer Guy Degrenne recently invited Paris Update to a wine tasting, conducted by Manuel Peyrondet, sommelier at the Royal Monceau Hotel, designed to demonstrate that different types of glasses for different types of wine really do make a difference. It’s true, especially for Bordeaux, which tasted rounder and less tannic in a traditional Bordeaux glass than it did in a medium-sized tasting glass.

BOULOGNE-BILLANCOURT BURGERS
Quality hamburger joint Big Fernand continues to expand its small empire with a new location in Paris suburb Boulogne-Billlancourt, at 60, rue de Sèvres.
